freya.
have you seen my eyes?
content warning for: themes of non-consent, captivity, physical and sexual violence, abusive relationships, stockholm syndrome, and the like.

Freya is a mesmer that can erase memories and plant false ones in their stead. She is an employee of ASTER, an organization of witchcrafters that outsources their skills with criminal intent for those who find their own resources lacking. ASTER is full of outcasts and degenerates, and Freya lives the good life making even better money, lending her skills without guilt for the lives she alters or the memories she takes.

The effects of Freya's mesmer can be seen as a once-removed cousin to hypnotism. She can peel away a memory, the fresher the easier, and replace it with another, or simply erase the memory altogether. Older memories take more effort to remove and more skill to place a lasting and effective memory in its place. She most frequently employs small but strategic mesmers that provide a satisfying payoff — you remember hearing or saying yes instead of no, or you didn't let that stranger in the bar touch you like that so you got into your car instead of theirs (no clue where those bruises came from, though). Mesmers inherently rob their victims of consent and autonomy. Those with strong mental abilities have a chance of unraveling a mesmer placed upon them with significant patience and work.

Freya's criminal, cushy life goes to shit when she botches a job involving a powerful mesmer named Willow. Willow, a known trafficker of witchcrafters, swiftly cuts away Freya's mesmer shortly after her exit, tracking her down before she can return to ASTER and trapping her with his own illusion. Wreaking havoc on her mind and memories, he binds her to him for the next six years, their relationship a complicated and tumultuous storm of pretense and reality as she falls in and out of his mesmer. She becomes both his lover and partner in crime, and together they commit a magnitude of crimes against ASTER, until she is finally able to kill Willow and escape with what’s left of her life.

Just like her mesmer failed, so too did her murder attempt. She shortly discovers that Willow is alive and gunning for her. Refusing ASTER's witness protection, Freya is now on the run, having cut ties with ASTER and everyone else she knows, moving through life on a series of mesmered falsehoods.
